THE writing is on the wall for primary school children after they were given a glimpse of their futures at one of the country’s leading colleges.

Pupils from Gurney Pease Academy were the first to attend a weeklong series of visits to Darlington College by primary schools to give them an early insight into further education and possible careers.

Around 30 Year 5 pupils were divided into two groups for the half-day visit. One enjoyed a media workshop with a local journalist in which they were told that their news careers could start at Darlington College which is home to the National Council for the Training of Journalists.

As well as hearing about the rich diversity of experiences journalism offers, they were also able to interview each other and their teachers.

Other employers who conducted workshops during the week included United Infrastructure and Amazon.

The second group was taken on a tour of the college’s departments and facilities including media, robotics, automotive, engineering, catering, hair and beauty and construction. The groups then swapped over to complete the other activity.

Five primary schools were among the latest tranche to be invited to the college. The college’s engagement and events team leader Ross Lowcock said: “Many children don’t realise what is here at Darlington College, the facilities, expertise and opportunities we offer.

“We love to see them opening up their minds to these opportunities and it is lovely that when they make a return visit when they are at secondary school they always remember coming the very first time. It is never too early to get them thinking about their futures.”

Pupil Oliver Sherlock, 10, said: “I would love to come to Darlington College as it is amazing.”
