SCHOOLCHILDREN took a casual approach to fundraising when they decided to act to help earthquake-stricken Nepal.

Pupils from West Park Academy, Darlington, were given special permission to dress down for school in return for a donation to the Nepal earthquake disaster appeal.

Their efforts raised an impressive £521.32, which was celebrated at a special assembly at the school.

Vice principal Sam Hirst said: “The idea for a non-uniform day came from Year 6 pupils who wrote to the principal, Catherine Thompson, asking for official permission for the whole school to take part.

“The pupils were very keen to help the people of Nepal who had been affected by the earthquake because a lot of them now have absolutely nothing. We are all thrilled how much was raised, so well done to Year 6 for getting the ball rolling.”
