THE country’s best female swimmer will be able to swap the North-East for California after her college dived in to help her with her qualifications.
Darlington College arts student Emma Price is on an Olympic pathway to the 2032 Games in Brisbane.
The 19-year-old, of Newton Aycliffe, was offered a place at California State University, Fresno, to study criminology and criminal profiling, so she could also develop her swimming.
But the course she was studying at college last year wasn’t recognised in America and Darlington College had to step in to help with an arts course that is.
Emma, the daughter of a retired North Yorkshire police detective, is the best freestyle swimmer in the country at 1,500m, 800m and 400m, helped by being trained by Team GB coaches.
“I’m looking to combine my crime studies with my swimming and I’m so excited about being offered a place in America,” said Emma, who has been swimming since she was two, competes for Stockton Club and has been national champion on several occasions, including in London this April.
“My mum Cheryl was a detective and I’m interested in criminal profiling to try and catch serial killers.”
Darlington College art lecturer Abby Potter said: “It’s an incredible opportunity for Emma and we were only too happy to help when she needed to change to a course recognised in America.
“She is a very talented artist and has done amazingly well combining her studies with her swimming. I’m sure she will throw herself into her criminology too in order to keep up a family tradition.”
