SPORTS day proved to be a fertile training ground for the main event as students broke a host of school records before performing on a grander scale.

Darlington School of Mathematics students took to track and field for their annual sports day before competing successfully in the Town Sports.

Year 7 student Stefan Hornsby set a scorching time in the school 800m of 2.27 before going on to win gold at Town Sports the following day in the 1500m with a time of 5.27.

Year 10 student Ben Tinkler followed suit in the school 800m with a blistering time of 2.16. He then won gold in the 800m the following day as well.

Other school record breakers included Year 7 student Ella Todd, with a time of 3.02 in the 800m and Year 7 pupil Liam Thomas with his discus throw of 21.60m.

DSMS sport coordinator Michael Hillary said: “All the students did tremendously well and the record breakers have shown real promise.

“Those who succeeded at the Town Sports also proved that they can overcome their nerves and keep their composure at a big event which really boosted their self-esteem.”
