A YOUNG poet with a burning desire to write has claimed a national accolade with her work about fire.

Grace Morris, a student at The Wensleydale School & Sixth Form College, Leyburn, has become a Young Poet of the Year in a competition run by United Press.

The 12-year-old, of Hunton, had just 100 words to come up with a three verse poem about something in her life.

She was inspired as she sat with her dog watching the stove burn finally writing a poem about fire.

“I was really surprised to win because I entered last June but have just heard,” the Year 7 student said.

“I have always enjoyed English and started writing a collection of poems which I would like to have published.

“I plan to study English at A Level and university and would love to be a poet professionally one day.”
